Almeria stands out for many things: its gastronomy, climate, natural areas, people… Not to mention our local festivals. Several typical festivals are held throughout the year and they’re all quite special and super fun. In this post, we’re going to give you a list of the top 4 festivals in Almeria you just can’t miss this summer.
THE FESTIVAL OF THE MOORS AND CHRISTIANS
The most important festival in the village of Mojácar is the Festival of the Moors and Christians. This festival lasts 3 days and usually takes place the weekend closest to 10th June. Recalling how the Muslim population of Mojácar surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs, the slogan for this incredibly typical festival is “No winners, no losers”. It was a peaceful surrender, and the Muslim population were allowed to continue living in Mojácar with their customs. Nowadays, Mojácar is one of the Almerian villages with the greatest Muslim mark. The three festival days are filled with children’s games, medieval markets, reenactors with blunderbusses, parades, traditional dances and other festive activities. Plus, the village residents usually dress up as the different sides and participate in the parades.
This festival is not only popular in Mojácar. You can also enjoy it in Vera and Carboneras. This year in Vera, the 9th Moors and Christians of Vera Parade 2022 will be held on Saturday, 11th June 2022 as part of the festival honouring its patron saint, the Most Holy Lady of Sorrows.
The big day in Carboneras will be 13th June with two re-enactments of the fight between the two armies (one in the morning and one in the afternoon). A total of 100 men, 50 Moslems and 50 Christians, will fight for the image of the Saint and possession of the Saint Andrew Castle (Castillo de San Andrés).
BONFIRES ON ST JOHN’S EVE
The amazing and special St John’s Eve and all the bonfires light up many of Almeria’s beaches on 23rd June, creating a truly magical atmosphere. The beaches that night will be filled with bonfires as families, friends and couples gather to enjoy the light and warmth. It has been held every year since then during the last week of September and is a festival that attracts large crowds from all over the region. Concerts, performances and activities of all kinds make these festival days unforgettable.
